Ragnar's Day Viking Games 2018
Valkenhaus Family's 6th Annual Ragnar's Day Viking Games!
Valkenhaus family's 6th annual observance of Ragnar's Day took place over Easter weekend, March 30th through April 1st with Viking Games!
But First - Eggs!
Sunday - Ragnar's Day!
The spoon and egg race.
Then the adults joined in the games and warmed up with an egg toss and three-legged race.
Alex skewered the egg!
Stephen looks unsure being tied to Norse Father!
Ivonova ran the show, kept everyone organized and the games going!
Peter nails the course with a new fast time!
All the Little Vikings ran the course, too.
Don't let Lonny's relaxed demeanor fool you - notice all the 1st Place ribbons!
Dansk Spyd Viking Raiders arrived, got settled, and set up their Trading Post. And for those not versed in Danish, "Dansk Spyd" is pronounced "Densk Spule", said with potatoes in your mouth!
The next event for our Viking Games is a chugging contest.
Craig and Jake face off.
Norse Father and John go - and John finishes in 6.1 seconds!
Alex also finished in 6.1 seconds, so he and John did a winner's challenge - John finished tenths of a second ahead of Alex!
Dansk Spyd Viking Raiders!
Dansk Spyd Viking Raiders are a group of competitive, steel fighting, Viking age re-enactors based out of Springfield Ohio.
The group put together a demonstration of the various fighting styles.
They use real steel on their weapons, and although the tips are blunted it is still quite dangerous.
A variety of fighting charges and styles were employed.
The melee was quite intense!
An advance formation.
As part of the demonstration, all the children came forward and chose a Viking to be their Champion. John (slaying his opponent) was chosen by Kara as her Champion.
After the skirmish, John was victorious!
Kara proudly stands with her Champion!
Peter was our grill master and cooked up hot dogs and hamburgers. Bill and Jake are helping out!
Kara joined her Champion for lunch with the Dansk Spyd Vikings.
We had some great folks come out to join us! Sarah and Craig join Lonny, Jennifer and Jake, and Bill, Jessica and Damyon. You guys are awesome!
Craig tries his hand at the knife throwing.
Lonny has definitely done this before!
Stephen takes aim.
The children also join in the knife throwing - they all did amazing!
Peter checks the target.
The goal is to toss the rock and get closest to the line without going over.
Rain tosses her rock with some encouragement from Ivonova.
Ivonova and Bill with Damyon.
Next up is Alex, Bill, and Jake.
Alex, Kara, Stephen, Craig, Norse Father, Norse Mother, and Ivonova.
Craig and Sarah taking a break!
Our favorite event of the day!
Craig and Norse Father face off.
The sword fighting is based on point fighting, and points are awarded as such: 1/2 point for an appendage (hands, arms, legs), 1 point for the torso, and 2 points for the head. The match is won with 3 points.
Alex and Bill sparring.
Husband and wife team Kirstie and Stephen were drawn randomly!
Stephen won this round!
Our Viking friends decided to join in. We had to make a new rule - no sword throwing!
Peter and Alyssa sparring.
Ivonova taking off Norse Mother's legs!
Norse Mother and Ivonova sparring. Ivonova is employing the "flying, chop off her head" maneuver!
The Little Vikings also went a few rounds.
Rain and Kara sparring.
Kirstie and Stephen Valkenhaus
Norhalla held a raffle drawing, and Rain won her choice of books or a t-shirt. She picked out Norse Mother's Tales: Odin's Hungry Horse and could hardly wait to read it!
Craig and Rain
The day was winding down. It was another fantastic Ragnar's Day! We met some amazing people, made new friends, and had an incredible weekend.
We said our farewell to Dansk Spyd Viking Raiders
Kara saying goodbye to her Champion John.
And the Ragnar's Day 2018 overall Games Champion is Peter! (Who is always Ivonova's Champion!)
From the Valkenhaus family and Norhalla, thank you everyone for joining us!
